With the winter months ahead, this is the time to prepare a defence technique to winterize your hair. The winter months ahead can be a harsh time for your hair. Not only will you find winter hair care tips from renowned hair experts here, but you’ll also find a wealth of specific product recommendations, guaranteed to keep your tresses in tip-top shape over the dreary winter months. Happy reading!

I always like to share not only product tips with my clients during the winter months, but also ideas on winterized eating. Just as the hot days of summer make us naturally want to eat lighter meals, the winter has the opposite effect on the human body — for good reason. The body is trying to prepare itself for the cold winter months ahead, and eating the right foods during the winter months will help your scalp and hair remain vibrant and healthy no matter what cold, dry temps Mother Nature throws at you.

Eat Well

Be sure you eat a balanced diet full of nutrient-dense, good fat foods. Avocado, nuts, and fatty fish such as salmon feed your skin. Ever wonder why Eskimos don’t suffer from dry skin, even though their winter is especially harsh? Their diet is rich in healthy fats.

Don't over-wash your hair

Over-washing can cause a scalp to become overly dry, therefore creating flakes which many people mistake for dandruff. Also, when washing, use tepid, not hot water. Water that is too high in temperature will strip oil from the scalp, leaving it dry and itchy. Your hair needs oil from the scalp to maintain a healthy balance.

A Leave-in is your friend

Pick a leave-in conditioner that will protect your strands from the elements. Or, try using moisturizers that you can apply to dry hair in between washes. This will keep your hair soft and manageable in the harsh cold winds.

Deep Conditioning is crucial

Choose a deep conditioner that has natural oils in it, like jojoba oil or coconut oil. This will help battle dry parched hair during the winter months. If your hair is prone to being dry, use a deep conditioner once a week. Leave it in your hair for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out. If your hair is more oily, deep condition once every two weeks. During the
wintertime, you really want to break out anything and everything with conditioning powers. If you are not a regular conditioner user during the rest of the year, now is the time to start using it to hydrate your hair and keep it healthy and lively so it doesn’t get dull and crunchy during the cold months.
